Washing Machine Door Won’t Open
If your washing machine door won’t open, the door lock mechanism is preventing the door from releasing. This is a common issue and in many cases it can be resolved at home without the need for an engineer.

Why Won’t My Washing Machine Door Open?
Washing machine doors are kept locked during and after a cycle by an interlock mechanism. The door should release automatically a few minutes after the cycle ends. If it does not, there are several possible causes — most of which can be checked before calling an engineer.
Common Causes
Cycle has not fully completed
The most common reason. The door lock will not release until the machine has finished the cycle, drained the water and cooled down. Wait at least 2 to 3 minutes after the cycle ends before attempting to open the door.
Water still in the drum
If the machine has not drained correctly, the door interlock will remain engaged as a safety measure to prevent flooding. Check whether there is water in the drum and address the drainage fault first.
Power cut or loss of power mid-cycle
If the power was interrupted during a cycle, the door may remain locked. Restoring power and allowing the machine to complete or cancel the cycle will usually release the door.
Faulty door lock or interlock
If the door lock mechanism itself has failed, it may remain in the locked position even after the cycle has finished and the drum has drained.
Child lock activated
Some washing machines have a child lock feature that prevents the door from being opened. Check your user manual to find out how to deactivate the child lock on your model.
Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer
Wait a few minutes
Allow 2 to 3 minutes after the cycle ends for the door interlock to cool down and release. On some models this can take up to 5 minutes.
Check for water in the drum
Look through the door glass to see if there is water sitting in the drum. If there is, the machine has not drained and the door will remain locked. Run a drain and spin programme to clear the water first.
Reset the machine
Switch the machine off at the mains and leave it unplugged for a few minutes. Plug back in — this can reset the door interlock and allow it to release.
Check the child lock
Refer to your user manual to check whether the child lock is activated and how to turn it off.
Use the emergency release
Some washing machines have an emergency door release — a small tab or cord located behind the pump filter cover at the bottom front of the machine. Check your user manual to see if your model has this feature.
When To Contact A Professional
If the door remains locked after the above checks and there is no water in the drum, the door lock or interlock mechanism has likely failed and will need to be replaced by a qualified engineer. Do not force the door open as this can cause damage to the door seal, hinges and lock mechanism. Internal components should only be inspected or repaired by trained professionals.
