Dishwasher Not Filling With Water

If your dishwasher is not filling with water, the appliance will start the cycle but the tub will remain empty or fill very slowly, leaving dishes unwashed. There are several possible causes, many of which can be checked at home before calling an engineer.

Why Is My Dishwasher Not Filling With Water?

When a dishwasher fails to fill, the cycle may start but the machine will not wash effectively as there is insufficient water in the tub. Most modern dishwashers will display an error code when a fill fault is detected — check the brand-specific guide above for the relevant codes for your appliance.

Common Causes

Water supply tap turned off or not fully open
The most common cause. The tap supplying the dishwasher must be fully open. It is usually located under the kitchen sink.

Kinked or blocked inlet hose
If the water inlet hose is kinked or blocked, water cannot flow into the machine.

Blocked inlet filter
A small mesh filter at the water inlet valve connection can become clogged with debris and restrict water flow.

Faulty water inlet valve
The water inlet valve controls the flow of water into the dishwasher. If it has failed, water will not enter the machine even if the supply is fully open.

Float switch fault
The float switch monitors the water level inside the tub. If it is stuck in the raised position it will prevent the machine from filling even when the tub is empty.

Door not fully closed
The dishwasher will not fill if the door is not properly latched. Ensure the door is firmly closed before starting a cycle.

Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer

Check the water supply tap
Locate the tap under the sink and ensure it is fully open.

Check the inlet hose
Inspect the water inlet hose for any kinks or crushing and straighten if necessary.

Clean the inlet filter
Turn off the water supply. Disconnect the inlet hose from the back of the machine and remove the small mesh filter from the inlet valve connection. Rinse it under running water and refit before reconnecting the hose.

Check the door
Open and firmly reclose the door, ensuring it latches correctly before restarting.

Reset the machine
Switch the dishwasher off at the mains and leave it unplugged for a few minutes. Plug back in and try again.

When To Contact A Professional

If the dishwasher still fails to fill after checking the supply, hose and filter, the water inlet valve or float switch is likely faulty and will need to be tested and replaced by a qualified engineer. Internal components should only be inspected or repaired by trained professionals.
