Dishwasher Smells Bad
Almost always caused by food debris and bacteria build-up โ resolved with cleaning, not an engineer.
๐งน Clean the filter first โ A dirty filter is the most common cause of dishwasher odours. Remove it, scrub it clean under running water and refit before trying anything else.
Common Causes
๐งน
Dirty or Blocked Filter
The most common cause. The filter collects food debris from every cycle. If not cleaned regularly, trapped food decomposes and produces a foul smell. Clean the filter at least once a month โ more frequently if used daily.
๐ต
Food Debris in the Door Seal
Food particles and grease accumulate in the folds of the rubber door seal, particularly along the bottom. This debris decomposes over time and produces an unpleasant smell noticeable when the door is opened.
๐ฆ
Blocked or Dirty Spray Arms
Food debris can accumulate inside the spray arms and decompose, causing odours. The spray arms should be removed and rinsed periodically to keep them clean.
๐ง
Stagnant Water in the Base or Drain Hose
If water is not draining fully from the machine after each cycle it becomes stagnant and produces a smell. A partially blocked filter or drain hose can allow a small amount of water to remain in the machine.
๐
Infrequent Use
If the dishwasher is not used regularly, water sitting in the base and drain hose can become stagnant. Running a hot cycle at least once a week helps prevent this.
Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer
๐งน
Clean the Filter Thoroughly
Remove the filter assembly, rinse it under running water and use a soft brush to remove any stubborn debris. Refit securely. This should be done at least once a month.
๐ต
Clean the Door Seal
Wipe the door seal thoroughly with a damp cloth, paying particular attention to the folds along the bottom of the door where debris collects. A mild cleaning solution can be used if needed.
๐ฆ
Clean the Spray Arms
Remove the spray arms, rinse them under running water and use a toothpick to clear any blocked holes. Refit securely before running the next cycle.
๐ก๏ธ
Run a Hot Maintenance Wash
Run an empty cycle on the hottest programme with a dishwasher cleaner tablet or a cup of white vinegar in the bottom of the tub. This removes grease, food residue and bacteria from inside the machine. Do this at least once a month.
๐ช
Leave the Door Ajar After Use
Leaving the dishwasher door slightly open after a cycle allows moisture to escape and prevents the build-up of mould and bacteria inside the machine.
๐
Check the Drain Hose
Ensure the drain hose is not partially blocked and that water is draining fully from the machine after each cycle. Stagnant water in the hose is a common source of odour.

๐ง
When to call a professional โ A bad smell is almost never caused by a mechanical fault. If the smell persists after a thorough clean and a hot maintenance wash, there may be a partial blockage in the drain system that requires professional attention.
