Dishwasher Smells Bad

If your dishwasher smells bad, the appliance is producing an unpleasant odour during or after the cycle. This is a very common complaint and in the vast majority of cases it can be resolved at home with cleaning and maintenance rather than an engineer visit.

Why Does My Dishwasher Smell Bad?

A bad smell from a dishwasher is almost always caused by food debris, grease and bacteria building up inside the machine over time — particularly in the filter, door seal and spray arms. Regular cleaning and maintenance will prevent odours from developing and keep the machine running efficiently.

Common Causes

Dirty or blocked filter
The most common cause. The filter collects food debris from every cycle. If it is not cleaned regularly, trapped food decomposes and produces a foul smell. The filter should be cleaned at least once a month — more frequently if the dishwasher is used daily.

Food debris trapped in the door seal
Food particles and grease can accumulate in the folds of the rubber door seal, particularly along the bottom of the door. This debris decomposes over time and produces an unpleasant smell that is often noticeable when the door is opened.

Blocked or dirty spray arms
Food debris can accumulate inside the spray arms, decomposing and causing odours. The spray arms should be removed and rinsed periodically.

Stagnant water in the base or drain hose
If water is not draining fully from the machine after each cycle, it will become stagnant and produce a smell. A partially blocked filter or drain hose can allow a small amount of water to remain in the machine.

Infrequent use
If the dishwasher is not used regularly, water sitting in the base and drain hose can become stagnant. Running a hot cycle at least once a week helps prevent this.

Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer

Clean the filter thoroughly
Remove the filter assembly, rinse it under running water and use a soft brush to remove any stubborn debris. Refit securely.

Clean the door seal
Wipe the door seal thoroughly with a damp cloth, paying particular attention to the folds along the bottom of the door where debris collects. A mild cleaning solution can be used if needed.

Clean the spray arms
Remove the spray arms, rinse them under running water and use a toothpick to clear any blocked holes. Refit securely.

Run a hot maintenance wash
Run an empty cycle on the hottest programme with a dishwasher cleaner tablet or a cup of white vinegar in the bottom of the tub. This will remove grease, food residue and bacteria from inside the machine. Do this at least once a month.

Check the drain hose
Ensure the drain hose is not partially blocked and that water is draining fully from the machine after each cycle.

Leave the door ajar after use
Leaving the dishwasher door slightly open after a cycle allows moisture to escape and prevents the build-up of mould and bacteria inside the machine.

When To Contact A Professional

A bad smell from a dishwasher is almost never caused by a mechanical fault. If the smell persists after a thorough clean of the filter, door seal and spray arms and a hot maintenance wash, there may be a partial blockage in the drain system that requires professional attention. Internal components should only be inspected or repaired by trained professionals.
