How To Clean a Whirlpool Tumble Dryer

How To Clean A whirlpool Tumble Dryer

Cleaning your Whirlpool tumble dryer regularly is important for both performance and safety. Lint, fluff and debris build up inside the machine after every use, and if left uncleaned, can reduce drying efficiency, cause overheating and in serious cases present a fire risk. A thorough clean every few weeks will keep your Whirlpool dryer running safely and efficiently.

Why Does a Whirlpool Tumble Dryer Need Cleaning?

Every time a Whirlpool tumble dryer runs, it removes moisture from laundry and expels it either through a vent hose or by condensing it into a water tank. During this process, lint and fluff from the laundry collects in the filter, the drum, the condenser unit and the vent hose. If this build-up is not removed regularly, airflow through the machine is restricted, causing it to work harder, dry less efficiently and run at higher temperatures than intended. A blocked lint filter or vent is also one of the leading causes of tumble dryer fires, making regular cleaning an important safety measure.

What You Will Need

A soft cloth or microfibre cloth, a vacuum cleaner with a narrow attachment, and access to the lint filter and condenser unit if applicable.

How To Clean Your Whirlpool Tumble Dryer

Clean the lint filter after every use
The lint filter should be cleaned after every cycle without exception. Open the dryer door and locate the lint filter, which is usually positioned just inside the door opening on your Whirlpool machine. Remove the filter, peel away the accumulated lint by hand, and replace the filter before starting the next cycle. A heavily blocked filter significantly reduces drying performance and increases energy consumption.

Wash the lint filter regularly
In addition to removing lint after every use, wash the lint filter under warm running water every few weeks to remove any fine residue that has built up through the mesh. Allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

Clean the drum
Wipe the inside of the drum with a damp cloth to remove any residue, marks or debris. If the drum has developed stains from items left in pockets such as tissues or ink, a small amount of washing up liquid on a damp cloth can be used. Rinse the drum with a clean damp cloth afterwards and run the machine empty for a short cycle to ensure it is completely dry before use.

Clean the condenser unit (condenser dryers only)
If you have a Whirlpool condenser dryer, the condenser unit collects moisture from the air and should be cleaned regularly. The condenser is usually located behind a panel at the bottom front of the machine. Remove it according to your machine’s instructions and rinse it under cold running water until the water runs clear. Allow it to dry fully before replacing it. Check your machine’s manual for the recommended cleaning frequency.

Empty and clean the water tank (condenser dryers only)
The water tank collects the moisture extracted from laundry during drying. It should be emptied after every cycle or when the Whirlpool machine indicates it is full. Rinse the tank with clean water periodically to prevent any residue or odour from developing.

Check and clean the vent hose (vented dryers only)
If you have a vented Whirlpool tumble dryer, check the vent hose periodically for any lint blockages. Disconnect the hose and check along its length for any accumulated debris. Ensure the external vent opening is clear and unobstructed. A blocked vent hose is a significant fire risk and should be addressed immediately if a blockage is found.

Wipe down the exterior
Wipe the outside of the machine including the door glass and control panel with a damp cloth. Keep the area around the dryer clear of laundry and other items to ensure adequate ventilation around the appliance.

When To Contact A Professional

If the dryer is taking significantly longer than usual to dry laundry after cleaning the filter and condenser, or if the machine is overheating, shutting off unexpectedly or displaying an error code, there may be a more serious internal fault. A qualified engineer should inspect the Whirlpool machine if basic cleaning does not resolve the issue. Do not use the dryer if you suspect a fault with the heating element or if you notice any burning smell during operation.
