Washing Machine Smells Musty
Common causes and checks you can carry out at home to get rid of the smell for good.
๐ Try this first โ Run an empty wash at the hottest temperature available, ideally 90ยฐC, with a washing machine cleaner tablet. This resolves the majority of musty smell problems on its own.
Common Causes
๐ฆ
Bacteria and Mould in the Drum
Low-temperature washes do not reach the temperatures needed to kill bacteria inside the drum. Over time a layer of bacteria and mould builds up on the drum walls, producing a persistent musty odour that transfers to laundry.
๐ต
Contaminated Door Seal
The rubber door seal traps water, fluff, hair and detergent residue in its folds after every wash. This is one of the most common sources of musty smells and creates ideal conditions for mould and bacteria to grow.
๐งด
Dirty Detergent Drawer
Detergent and fabric conditioner residue accumulates in the drawer and its housing. If left uncleaned, this residue becomes a breeding ground for mould and bacteria that contribute to the musty smell.
๐ง
Blocked Pump Filter
A blocked pump filter traps debris, fluff and standing water at the base of the machine. If left uncleaned, this produces unpleasant odours that spread through the drum during every wash cycle.
๐ช
Poor Ventilation After Cycles
Closing the door immediately after a wash traps moisture inside the drum. Combined with residual warmth, this creates the damp conditions in which mould and bacteria thrive.
Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer
๐ก๏ธ
Run a Hot Maintenance Wash
Select the hottest programme available โ ideally 90ยฐC โ and run the machine empty or with a washing machine cleaner tablet. The high temperature kills bacteria and breaks down residue inside the drum and pipes. Do this at least once a month if you regularly wash at low temperatures.
๐งน
Clean the Door Seal
Pull back the folds of the rubber door seal and wipe thoroughly with a damp cloth. For stubborn mould, apply diluted white vinegar or a washing machine cleaner, leave for a few minutes, then wipe and rinse. Dry the seal and leave the door ajar to allow air to circulate.
๐งผ
Clean the Detergent Drawer
Remove the drawer by pressing the release tab and pulling it out. Rinse under warm water and scrub away residue with a soft brush. Clean the drawer housing with a damp cloth and replace once clean and dry.
๐ง
Clean the Pump Filter
The pump filter is behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine. Place towels beneath it before opening as water will drain out. Twist anticlockwise to remove, clear any debris, rinse, and refit by twisting clockwise. Ensure the cap is tightly secured to prevent leaks.
๐ช
Leave the Door Ajar Between Washes
After every wash cycle, leave the machine door slightly open to allow the drum to air out and dry. This simple habit significantly reduces moisture and bacteria build-up over time and is the single most effective preventative measure.

๐ง
When to call a professional โ If the musty smell persists after completing all of the above steps, there may be a blockage or contamination deeper within the machine’s pipework or drainage system. A qualified engineer can inspect and clean internal components that are not accessible during routine home maintenance.
