Tumble Dryer Not Drying Clothes Properly

In most cases this is a maintenance issue, not a mechanical fault. Start with the lint filter.

๐Ÿงน Clean the lint filter first โ€” A blocked lint filter is the single most common cause of poor drying performance. It must be cleaned after every single cycle without exception.

Common Causes

๐Ÿงน

Blocked Lint Filter

The most common cause by far. The lint filter must be cleaned after every single drying cycle. Even a partially blocked filter significantly reduces airflow and drying efficiency across all dryer types.

โ™ป๏ธ

Blocked Condenser (condenser and heat pump dryers only)

A clogged condenser reduces the machine’s ability to extract moisture from the air, leaving clothes damp. The condenser should be rinsed clean regularly โ€” check your user manual for the recommended frequency.

๐Ÿชฃ

Full Water Tank (condenser and heat pump dryers only)

A full condensate water tank prevents the dryer from collecting further moisture. Always empty the tank before starting a new cycle.

๐Ÿ“ก

Dirty Humidity Sensors

The humidity sensors inside the drum detect when laundry is dry and end the cycle automatically. If coated in fabric softener residue they give inaccurate readings and end the cycle too early. Wipe them with a clean damp cloth regularly.

๐Ÿ‘•

Overloaded Drum

If too many items are in the drum, air cannot circulate freely and clothes cannot tumble properly. The drum should be no more than two thirds full for most programmes.

๐Ÿ“‹

Wrong Programme Selected

Too short a programme or too low a heat setting for the load type will result in damp laundry. Ensure you are using the correct programme for the fabric type and load size.

๐Ÿ’ง

Laundry Too Wet Going In

If the washing machine has not spun laundry adequately, the dryer will struggle with a standard cycle. Run an extra spin cycle on the washing machine before transferring to the dryer.

Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer

๐Ÿงน

Clean the Lint Filter

Remove the lint filter and clean it thoroughly. Rinse under water if needed and allow to dry completely before refitting. Do this after every single cycle.

โ™ป๏ธ

Clean the Condenser

Remove the condenser unit, rinse it thoroughly under cold running water until the water runs clear, and allow it to dry completely before refitting.

๐Ÿชฃ

Empty the Water Tank

Pull out the condensate water tank, empty it fully and refit it firmly before starting the next cycle.

๐Ÿ“ก

Wipe the Humidity Sensors

Wipe the two metal sensor strips on the inside of the drum with a clean damp cloth to remove any fabric softener residue that may be causing early cycle cut-off.

๐Ÿ‘•

Reduce the Load Size

Try drying a smaller load and see if performance improves. If it does, overloading was the cause. The drum should be no more than two thirds full for most drying programmes.
