LG Washing Machine Smells Musty
LG Washing Machine Smells Musty
If your LG washing machine smells musty, the appliance has developed a build-up of bacteria, mould or mildew inside the drum, door seal or detergent drawer. This is a very common problem and in most cases it can be resolved at home without the need for an engineer.

Why Does My LG Washing Machine Smell Musty?
A musty smell from an LG washing machine is almost always caused by bacteria and mould that has built up inside the appliance over time. LG washing machines used predominantly on low-temperature programmes do not get hot enough to kill bacteria effectively, which allows it to accumulate in the drum, door seal and detergent drawer. Poor ventilation after cycles finish and leaving damp laundry inside the machine for extended periods can make the problem worse.
Common Causes
Bacteria and mould build-up in the drum
Low-temperature washes do not reach the temperatures needed to kill bacteria inside the drum. Over time, a layer of bacteria and mould develops on the drum walls, producing a persistent musty odour that transfers to laundry during the wash cycle.
Contaminated door seal
The rubber door seal on an LG washing machine traps water, fluff, hair and detergent residue in its folds after every wash. This creates an ideal environment for mould and bacteria to grow, and is one of the most common sources of musty smells.
Blocked or dirty detergent drawer
Detergent and fabric conditioner residue can accumulate in the detergent drawer and its housing over time. If the drawer is not cleaned regularly, this residue becomes a breeding ground for mould and bacteria.
Blocked pump filter
A blocked pump filter traps debris, fluff and standing water at the base of the machine. If left uncleaned, this can produce unpleasant odours that spread through the drum during use.
Poor ventilation after cycles
Leaving the LG washing machine door closed immediately after a cycle traps moisture inside the drum. Combined with residual warmth, this creates the damp conditions in which mould and bacteria thrive.
Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer
Run a hot maintenance wash
Select the hottest programme available on your LG machine, ideally 90°C, and run it empty or with a washing machine cleaner tablet. The high temperature kills bacteria and helps to break down residue inside the drum and pipes. This should be done at least once a month if the machine is used regularly on low-temperature programmes.
Clean the door seal
Pull back the folds of the rubber door seal and wipe thoroughly with a damp cloth. Remove any visible mould, fluff or debris. For stubborn mould, a small amount of diluted white vinegar or a proprietary washing machine cleaner can be used. Dry the seal after cleaning and leave the door ajar to allow air to circulate.
Clean the detergent drawer
Remove the detergent drawer fully by pressing the release tab and pulling it out. Rinse it under warm water, scrubbing away any residue with a soft brush. Clean the drawer housing inside the machine using a damp cloth. Replace the drawer once clean and dry.
Clean the pump filter
The pump filter on LG washing machines is located behind a small cover panel at the bottom front of the machine. Place a shallow dish or towels beneath it before opening as water will drain out. Twist the filter cap anticlockwise to remove it, clear any debris, and refit by twisting clockwise. Always ensure the cap is tightly refitted to prevent leaks.
Leave the door ajar between washes
After each wash cycle, leave the machine door slightly open to allow the drum to dry out. This simple habit significantly reduces the build-up of moisture and bacteria over time.

When To Contact A Professional
If the musty smell persists after completing all of the above steps, there may be a blockage or contamination deeper within the machine’s pipework or drainage system. A qualified engineer will be able to inspect and clean internal components that are not accessible during routine home maintenance.
