Tumble Dryer Not Drying Clothes Properly

If your tumble dryer is not drying clothes properly, the appliance is running through the cycle but leaving laundry damp or only partially dry at the end. This is one of the most common tumble dryer complaints and in the majority of cases it is caused by a maintenance issue rather than a mechanical fault.

Why Is My Tumble Dryer Not Drying Clothes Properly?

When a tumble dryer leaves clothes damp at the end of a cycle, the most common cause is a maintenance issue rather than a mechanical fault. Before investigating further, always start with the lint filter — a blocked filter is the single most frequent cause of poor drying performance on all types of tumble dryer.

Common Causes

Blocked lint filter
The most common cause by far. The lint filter must be cleaned after every single drying cycle. Even a partially blocked filter significantly reduces airflow and drying efficiency.

Blocked condenser (condenser and heat pump dryers)
A clogged condenser reduces the machine’s ability to extract moisture from the air. The condenser should be rinsed clean regularly — check your user manual for the recommended frequency.

Full water tank (condenser and heat pump dryers)
A full condensate water tank prevents the dryer from collecting further moisture. Always empty the tank before starting a new cycle.

Dirty humidity sensors
The humidity sensors inside the drum detect when laundry is dry and end the cycle automatically. If they are coated in fabric softener residue they can give inaccurate readings and end the cycle too early. Wipe them with a clean damp cloth regularly.

Overloaded drum
If too many items are in the drum, air cannot circulate freely and clothes cannot tumble properly. The drum should be no more than two thirds full for most programmes.

Wrong programme selected
Selecting too short a programme or too low a heat setting for the load type will result in damp laundry. Check you are using the correct programme for the fabric type and load size.

Laundry too wet going in
If the washing machine has not spun the laundry adequately before it goes in the dryer, the dryer will struggle to dry it in a standard cycle. Run an extra spin cycle on the washing machine before transferring to the dryer.

Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer

Clean the lint filter
Remove the lint filter and clean it thoroughly. Rinse under water if needed and allow to dry before refitting.

Clean the condenser
Remove the condenser unit, rinse it thoroughly under running water and allow it to dry completely before refitting.

Empty the water tank
Pull out the condensate water tank, empty it fully and refit it firmly.

Wipe the humidity sensors
Wipe the two metal sensor strips on the inside of the drum with a clean damp cloth to remove any fabric softener residue.

Reduce the load size
Try drying a smaller load and see if performance improves. If it does, overloading was the cause.

When To Contact A Professional

If drying performance remains poor after all of the above checks, there may be a fault with the heating element, thermostat or heat pump system that requires professional diagnosis. Internal components should only be inspected or repaired by trained professionals.
