Neff Washing Machine Black Mould on Door Seal
Neff Washing Machine Black Mould on Door Seal
If you have noticed black mould on your Neff washing machine door seal, this is caused by mould and bacteria that has built up in the folds of the rubber gasket over time. This is a very common problem with front-loading washing machines and in most cases it can be treated at home without the need for an engineer.

Why Does Black Mould Develop on the Neff Washing Machine Door Seal?
The rubber door seal on a Neff washing machine is designed to create a watertight barrier between the drum and the door glass. After every wash cycle, water, fluff, hair and detergent residue collect in the folds of the seal. If the seal is not dried and the door is kept closed, the trapped moisture and warmth create ideal conditions for black mould to grow. Neff washing machines used predominantly on low-temperature programmes are more susceptible as the water does not reach temperatures that would naturally kill bacteria and mould spores.
Common Causes
Trapped moisture in the door seal folds
The design of the door seal naturally traps water in its folds after every wash cycle. If the door is closed immediately after use and the seal is not wiped dry, moisture sits in the rubber for extended periods and allows mould to develop.
Low-temperature washing
Washing at 30°C or 40°C does not kill the bacteria and mould spores that accumulate inside the machine. Over time these spores colonise the door seal and produce the characteristic black mould patches.
Detergent and fabric conditioner residue
Undissolved detergent and fabric conditioner residue can accumulate in the door seal. This sticky residue provides a food source for mould and encourages faster growth.
Infrequent cleaning
Without regular cleaning, mould on the door seal becomes increasingly difficult to remove. The longer it is left, the deeper the mould penetrates the rubber, potentially causing permanent staining or deterioration of the seal.
Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer
Clean the door seal
Pull back all of the folds of the rubber door seal carefully and wipe away any visible mould, debris and residue using a damp cloth. For black mould, apply a small amount of diluted white vinegar or a proprietary washing machine cleaner to the affected areas and leave for a few minutes before wiping away. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry the seal completely after cleaning.
Run a hot maintenance wash
After cleaning the seal, run an empty wash at the hottest temperature available, ideally 90°C, to kill any remaining bacteria and mould spores inside the machine. A washing machine cleaner tablet can be added to the drum to improve effectiveness.
Dry the seal after every wash
After each wash cycle, wipe the door seal dry with a clean cloth and leave the machine door slightly ajar. This allows air to circulate inside the drum and prevents moisture from building up in the seal folds.
Check the detergent dosage
Using too much detergent or fabric conditioner can leave excess residue on the door seal. Follow the dosage instructions on the detergent packaging and ensure you are using a detergent suitable for automatic washing machines.

When To Contact A Professional
If the black mould has caused the door seal to deteriorate, crack or develop a persistent leak, the seal will need to be replaced. Door seal replacement is a job for a qualified engineer as it requires partial disassembly of the machine. A professional can also inspect the drum and internal components for further mould contamination if the problem has been present for an extended period.
