Why Is My Zanussi Washing Machine Leaking?

A leaking washing machine can have several causes. The location of the leak — front, back, underneath or from the detergent drawer — will help narrow down the source. Most leaks are caused by worn door seals, loose hose connections, a blocked pump filter or an overfilled detergent drawer.

Common Causes

Worn or damaged door seal
The most common cause of a front leak. The rubber door seal can crack, tear or accumulate debris over time, allowing water to escape around the door during the cycle. Inspect the seal carefully for any visible damage or foreign objects lodged in the folds.

Loose or damaged inlet hose
If the machine is leaking from the back, check the water inlet hose connections at both the wall and the machine. A loose or cracked hose will drip or spray water during filling.

Loose or damaged drain hose
A drain hose that is not secured properly or has cracked can leak during the pump-out phase of the cycle.

Blocked or loose pump filter
If the pump filter cover at the bottom front of the machine is not seated correctly after cleaning, or if the filter housing is cracked, water can escape from underneath the machine.

Detergent drawer overfilled or blocked
Using too much detergent or a blocked detergent drawer can cause water and foam to overflow from the drawer area and run down the front of the machine.

Drum seal or bearing fault
If the machine is leaking from underneath and none of the above apply, the drum seal or bearings may have failed. This will require professional attention.

Checks To Try Before Calling An Engineer

Inspect the door seal
Check the rubber door seal all the way around for cracks, tears or debris. Clean the seal thoroughly and check again.

Check hose connections
Ensure the inlet and drain hoses are firmly connected at both ends. Check the hoses for cracks or splits.

Check the pump filter
Ensure the pump filter cover at the bottom front of the machine is fully tightened and correctly seated.

Check the detergent drawer
Remove and clean the detergent drawer. Use the correct amount of detergent for your machine and water type.

Reset the machine
Switch off at the mains and leave unplugged for a few minutes. Plug back in and run a short cycle while watching to identify exactly where the water is coming from.

When To Contact A Professional

If you cannot identify the source of the leak or the leak is coming from inside the machine, a qualified engineer should be called to inspect the drum seal, bearings and internal components. Do not continue to run the machine if it is leaking as water near electrical components can be dangerous.
